New insights into crisis communication from an “inside” <i>emic</i> perspective during COVID-19

As the COVID-19 pandemic spread across world, requiring emergency management by health authorities and providers, it created flow-on crises “crisis contagion” for organizations ranging from international airlines tourism operators to local businesses, schools, universities. In addition risks directly associated with emergency, many were plunged into crisis because of severe restrictions their operations income losses. This analysis examines communication in an organization faced major financial losses, staff redundancies, disruption. It analyses how these necessary responses communicated stakeholders, using situational theory (SCCT), as its analytical framework. While noting alternative perspectives such risk (CERC) theory, SCCT is identified most widely applied communication, thus warrants ongoing review era media fragmentation, disinformation, low public trust. Furthermore, this provides a relatively rare “inside” ( emic) perspective through ethnography autoethnography conducted senior decision-maker studied, which expands traditional outside etic) offers new insights communication.
